Christmas
Cuisine
We're
sure you've heard of Italian cuisine, or Indian
or Chinese, but have you heard of Christmas
cuisine? That's right! There is a lavish array
of food that is traditionally associated with
the season of goodwill. Of course every country
has its own traditional Christmas food from the
Swedish Vort Limpa (rye bread with grated orange
peel) and the very British Dundee cake and roast
beef to the spicy Chicken or Lamb Biryani from
India (spicy rice cooked with meat).
But what are the Christmas staples right here in
the USA? In case you were wondering, we've
compiled a delicious list especially for those
who are blissfully afflicted with the proverbial
'sweet tooth.'
Apple Cider &endash; A refreshing
non-alcoholic drink that can be enjoyed by the
entire family, apple cider is our choice of
preferred Christmas hydration. Another popular
drink, just right for the cold weather is hot or
mulled cider, made by adding spices, orange peel
etc to apple cider and heating it almost to
boiling point.
Cranberry Sauce- As popular during
Thanksgiving as during Christmas, the tart and
slightly sweet cranberry sauce is the perfect
accompaniment to a traditional roast turkey!
Eggnog &endash; A hot drink, typically
made with milk, egg and sugar, eggnog tastes
equally delicious with or without adding alcohol
(rum, brandy or cognac) to the concoction.
Fruit Cake &endash; A delicacy that's
believed to have originated in Rome, where pine
nuts and raisins were mixed into Barley mash,
the fruit cake is now an integral part of
Christmas festivities. In addition to candied
fruit, these cakes can also have rum and brandy
added to them, adding to their longevity and
rich taste.
Marzipan- Everyone's favorite candy
during Christmas time, Marzipan is nothing but
almonds and sugar made into small bits of candy
in various shapes and even colors! Along with
candy canes, marzipan makes for a very delicious
filling for those little red stockings that are
hung with so much expectation.
Hot Chocolate &endash; Truly the cup that
cheers at Christmas! Hot chocolate or hot cocoa
is always eagerly welcomed in the cold snowy
weather. Few other sensations can compare to the
comfort of cold hands and noses wrapped around
and buried in the warmth and aroma of a steaming
mug of chocolate.
Christmas cookies- A simple combination
of flour, eggs and sugar, what's so Christmassy
about Christmas cookies, you wonder? Well, it's
all about shape! And boy do Christmas cookies
come in Christmas shapes! Everything from the
simpler stars to the more complex angels and
Santas, to intricate Christmas trees, these
cookies can create the Christmas spirit all by
themselves. Not only are they absolutely
enjoyable to make and eat, they're also a good
gifting idea, especially for children to both
give and get!
