Christmas Music Online:
More Popular Than Ever
There's more to
Christmas music than groups of carolers drifting
from door to door, looking for a cup of hot coco
and possibly a bit of cash. It's not just about
Bing Crosby's dreams of a white holiday either,
or a worn copy of 'Jingle Bells' playing in your
living room on Christmas Eve. Or even gathering
around an otherwise underused piano and
harmonizing your way through a wobbly rendition
of 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' with the
rest of the family. Sure, old school stuff like
that does make up the bulk of Christmas music,
but recently Santa's musical helpers have
adapted to the modern times and taken their
tunes to the net. Looking to add some melodic
flavour to the holiday proceedings without
putting in all too much effort? You're only a
few clicks away!
There are dozens of web radio's and online music
servers sending gigabytes worth of musical
Christmas spirit into cyberspace. Be it
RadioRudolph.com, Christmas.fm,
ChristmasRadio.com, Happy Holidays Radio or
Radio Northpole: they all offer what you would
expect them to offer. Loads of Christmas songs
that is, at any given point of the day, and even
- for those who really can't get enough of it -
at any time of the year.
You like the whole Christmas thing but aren't
willing to go as far as listen to (admittedly
sometimes cheesy) classic tunes? Not to worry,
because there are plenty of ways to spice up the
proceedings a little: 'Xmas in Frisko' from Soma
FM, for example, offers an "annual ecclectic,
irreverent holiday broadcast. May not be
suitable for all ages." Consider yourself
warned... At 'Christmas Notes' you'll be treated
to jazzy easy listening interpretations of the
bearded man's repertoire, and 'Cutting Edge'
offers "an alternative Christmas". Expect lots
of guitars and unexpected cover versions! Or how
about La Radio De Père Noel? Seasonal
tunes from the city of light, Paris, delivered
straight into your living room: it doens't get
any more romantic than that, right?
Digital christmas music obviously has its
advantages: the aforementioned easy
accessibility is one (and let's face it: there's
so much to do in the holiday season that it's
nice to know you don't have to worry about the
music), but the possibility of downloading your
favourite songs to your computer and then
transferring them to a portable mp3-player is
obviously fantastic, too. Your early morning
walks through streets covered in crispy snow
will never be the same once you've strolled
around with decade old tunes playing in your
ears... Just don't forget to wish the other
people on the street a merry Christmas!
