Christmas Party Ideas
for 2007
There's more to a
Christmas party than singing along to Bing
Crosby, stuffing your face (and socks) and
exchanging gifts in the soft glow of the
gleaming Christmas tree - although those are all
wonderful things to do, and they deserve to be
part of every great Christmas celebration. But
there are ways to spice up the proceedings a
little - or a lot. Here are some ideas to turn
your Christmas party into an event people will
be talking about for months to come - or at
least till New Year's Eve.
* Decorating the Christmas tree: Remember
how you used to love it when you were young and
your dad brought in a big pine tree and its
scent would fill up the whole house? And how you
just couldn't wait to start dressing it up? Then
why don't you start off your party by decorating
the tree with your guests? Ask everybody to
bring a (home-made) ornament in a certain style,
and ask them to hang it in the tree as soon as
they arrive. There's no better way to make your
guests feel at home - and isn't that a big part
of what Christmas is all about?
* Serve egg nog or mulled wine: There are
very few holidays that come with their own
special drinks, so don't pass up on the occasion
of serving creamy, rich egg nog or steamy,
cinnamon-flavored mulled wine. Your guests are
sure to get into the spirit of things - just
make sure they don't get too much of the spirits
in them.
* Gift giving: One of the best parts
about Christmas - especially for kids - is the
ceremonious handing out of the gifts. There are
plenty of ways to turn this joyous part of the
party into an even more exciting event. One is
to write down the names of all the people
present on little pieces of paper, and then
putting them into a Christmas sock (you know the
ones). Let the youngest draw the first piece of
paper out of the sock and hand the present to
the person whose name is on there. That person
then gets to draw another name, and so on.
Pretty exciting - even when your name doesn't
get drawn till the end, because that means you
get all your presents at once! Another great
idea (again, especially when there are kids at
the party) is to wrap small and cheap presents
into multiple layers of paper. Then pass each
one around and ask everyone to remove no more
than one layer of wrapping. The one who gets to
finally tear away the last layer gets to keep
the present.
* Christmas carols: There's nothing wrong
with a bit of vocal harmonizing, but let's be
frank: by Christmas Eve, you'll be bored out of
your mind by all those so-called 'classic
Christmas songs'. A great way of avoiding the
tedious repertoire and still getting to sing
together, is to bring in a karaoke machine and
gather round the mic for touching renditions of
'Baby One More Time' or 'November Rain'.
* Christmas dinner: First off, reindeer
is never a good idea for your Christmas meat
dish. Slightly worried that people will fall
asleep at the dinner table (the combination of
egg nog, log fire, pre-holiday exhaustion and
rich food is known to cause mild comas)? Why not
put together a buffet, and allow your guests to
eat standing up or sat in comfy sofa's? Just
make sure you can keep your food warm, cause
cold cuts really don't cut it on Christmas
Eve.
